Getting Your Vehicle Ready for Spring
As winter continues to hold us in its grip, we still yearn for the warm days of the spring that is to come. Nearly classified as a cultural ritual, “spring cleaning” is already afoot in some preliminary ways in most people’s homes – at least in the planning stages. But how many of us really apply that same ‘rejuvenation’ theory to our vehicles? We would like to put this in your radar with a few useful ideas to consider:
- Check your tires. It’s always a good idea to keep on top of your tire pressure situation, as it changes with different temperature conditions and over time as well. Even checking it at a gas station can be somewhat misleading, as driving causes the tires to heat up and alters the reading. Once the weather begins to change, be sure to check your tire pressure, and do so before the car is driven.
- Rotate your tires. Tire rotation can extend the life of your tires, and after a brutal winter where just staying on the road is a challenge in itself, doing this if you haven’t done so already is a great idea.
- Clean your undercarriage. Salt, sand and road grime can corrode your undercarriage and lead to numerous problems in the various systems that are exposed to the road most directly. Most car washes provide the option for thorough undercarriage cleaning, as it may be difficult to access every area beneath your vehicle with a garden hose.
- Change your oil and filter. Although this is generally a standard procedure, often different viscosity of oil is used in the winter as opposed to the warmer months. Check your vehicle manual for recommendations.
- Check wiper blade condition. Snow, ice and freezing temperatures can often degrade windshield wiper performance and condition. Spring can bring heavy rainfall, and that is the worst time to discover that your wipers are not in great shape.
This list is by no means comprehensive in its reach, but sometimes these small details are overlooked. Mobile Installation Services works with cars, trucks and SUV’s every day of the week, and we see what a lack of maintenance can cause. Be proactive and keep your vehicle in optimal shape year round!
