Why You Need a Back-up Camera

A back-up camera is a special type of video camera mounted at the rear of a car, truck or SUV and designed to aid in backing up safely. A blind spot exists directly behind most vehicles and cannot be seen by the operator using conventional automotive mirrors.  This creates a danger zone, especially for small children and pets, and can also complicate backing up in congested parking lots or other tight spaces.

Back-up cameras can be connected to an interior head unit display, such as an in-dash DVD player or GPS screen, or to a dedicated monitor. Typically equipped with a wide-angle or fisheye lens, the field of view extends from one rear corner to the other, covering the entire blind spot. Such cameras are often oriented at a slight downward angle to view potential obstacles on the ground as well as their position relative to the vehicle. Inside, the display is normally wired to automatically sense when the transmission is set in reverse thus displaying the back-up view, and then reverting to a map or other content when not in use. Common in most applications that involve towing difficult-to-see trailers such as motorhomes, back-up cameras are also offered as stock equipment on many late-model vehicles and as an aftermarket option for virtually all others.
