Lane Departure Systems

The concept behind lane departure warning systems is simple, employing a camera coupled with processing software to watch how close you are to road surface markings. It adds a tangible measure of safety while driving and can save lives, not to mention thousands of dollars in crash repairs.

Lane departure systems are growing in capability as the technology evolves. Typically, it alerts you when you are about to drift across lane markings, but takes into account whether your turn signal is engaged or not. You would not want the warning to activate each time you had to turn, and as an incidental side effect, it may actually encourage drivers to use their turn signals consistently. The most common lane departure system consists of a camera mounted high up in the windshield, or as part of the rear view mirror mounting apparatus. Digitized video from the camera is parsed for the straight or dashed lines of lane markings, and if the vehicle deviates from these ‘boundaries’, various alert options are presented to the driver.

One recently emergent tool is ‘lane keep assist’, where the car automatically corrects course if it reaches the lane markings. Further developments in this field can automatically keep the vehicle centered in its lane while moving with subtle course corrections, but the driver can still override this operation and turn the steering wheel manually.
